    Background: Central Research Institute for Siddha was established in the year 1971 in a rented building at Chennai.  Subsequently the Government of Tamil Nadu has consented to provide a rent-free new building in order to impulse the research in Siddha system of medicine.  In the year 1975, this institute was shifted to the current rent free building and also established the Department of Clinical Research (DCR) along with the departments like Pathology and Bio-chemistry.

            The department of Clinical research carries out the clinical trials with 50 bedded hospital facilities.  Department of Biochemistry and Pathology laboratories also support the clinical research.  Pharmaco-vigilance cell also functions effectively for the betterment of the society and the system.

  • Single blind open clinical trial on VALIGUNMAM (Peptic Ulcer) – Coded drugs P6(1979-1992), Naga Parpam(1992-1994), Suyamagini Chenduram (1994-1998).
  • Single blind open clinical trial on SANTHUVATHA SOOLAI (Rheumatoid arthritis) – drugs are Gowri Chinthamani, Linga Chenduram, Linga Chenduram & Gowri Chinthamani, Vanga Chunnam, Chandamarutha Chenduram.
  • Single blind open clinical trial on KALANJAGAPADAI (Psoriasis) – Coded drug 777 Oil.
  • Single blind open clinical trial on MANJALKAMALAI (Jaundice) – drugs are Keezhanelli (1971-1974), Sangu Parpam Keezhanelli (1974-1976), Karisalai (1976-1979), Keezhanelli Karisalai (1979-1980), Amanakku elai Kalkam (1980-1982), Kovai elai(1982-1984), Kovai elai Amanakku elai (1984-1986), Thulasi elai Kalkam (1986-1987), Kozhi avarai kalkam (1987-1988), Kadugurohini (1988), Athimathuram (1992), Avuri elai Kalkam (1977 to 2005).

4. Services:
            Standard of Services:
This institute is providing medical care to patients seeking Siddha Medicines through its Out-Patient and In-Patient Departments (OPD & IPD).  The laboratory investigations are free only for patients under below poverty line, senior citizens reporting to Geriatric OPD and those participating in research projects. OPD registration fees of Rs.10/- and the fees for investigations as fixed by the Council time to time are applicable to other patients.
            Out Patient Department (OPD):

  • General OPD functions from 8.00 am to 12.00 Noon every day.

Special OP:

  • Diabetes Mellitus OP on Monday.
  • Geriatric - OP on Tuesday
  • Varmam and Thokkanam on all days

Timings: 8.00.am. to 12.00 Noon
In-Patient Department (IPD):

  • 50 - bedded hospital
  • Patients willing to participate in Research Projects are admitted in IPD wards available separately for both males & females and treated free of cost.
  • Visitors are allowed only between 4.00 pm and 6.00pm.

Investigation Facilities /Laboratories:

  • The facilities for Pathological and bio-chemical tests are available from 8.00 am to 11.30 am.
  • Investigation facilities to the OPD/IPD research cases, senior citizens reporting to GOPD and patients below poverty line are provided free of cost.
  • The charges for investigation as fixed by the Council will be collected from the patients of general category.
  • The investigations include X-Ray, Clinical Pathology and Biochemistry which is carried out with a Fully Computerised Auto-Analyser.

Miscellaneous Facilities:

  • Generator is available for uninterrupted power supply
  • Adequate drinking water and toilet facilities are available
  • Lift is available

Information Display:

  • Signage indicating OPD/IPD and various departments are fixed at relevant places.

In case of emergency, needing modern medicinal intervention, the patients are referred to KMC/Anna Peripheral Hospital/Govt. Hospital.
